Pet Friendly Alarms

Having pets in your home doesn’t mean you have to compromise on security. Many homeowners with pets think that having an alarm system will mean its continually being triggered accidentally by their pets but this isn’t the case.  There are several options for pet owners and below are some solutions to give you the very best security for your home, even with pets.

Pet security

Alarms

Home alarms are an excellent deterrent with statistics showing that as much as 60% of attempted break ins fail where alarms are fitted. But many pet-owners ignore this option for fear that their alarm will keep being accidentally triggered.  However, there are ways to prevent our pets from doing this.  Making sure the alarm package you choose includes a pet friendly motion sensor, will almost certainly prevent accidental alarm triggers. These sensors use a combination of several different technologies to determine mass, speed, movement patterns and body temperature, to rule out household pets. This means that you can happily set your alarm and leave your furry friend roaming freely around the house, without any alarm sounding problems!

There are two main types of motion detectors:

Passive infrared (PIR) – Passive detectors look for changes in the area such as body heat

Active infrared (IR) – Active systems emit energy waves that detect movement searching in their field of view

Mixed technology motion detectors are available which use both PIR and IR technology and these won’t alert the homeowners unless both sensors are tripped.

Consider your pets day to day habits when thinking about the positioning of sensors. For example, if your pet stays in the living room and can climb on the sofas, try pointing the sensors away from this space.

Try and place the sensors at approximately 5-6 feet high so that your pets are not easily dedected.

As a last resort you could set your alarm in night mode, meaning that the doors and windows are armed if an intruder breaks in but the sensors are not!  This isnt particularly the advised option but is a possiblity.

CCTV
Place internal cameras strategically to allow you to keep an eye on your pets whilst you are out and about! The new smart technology means that you can have access to the cameras via a smartphone, so you can keep track of what is happening in your home, even when you’re not there. This allows you to see what your pet gets up to when you’re not home and can also identify any daily routines or behaviours. which can then influence where you decide to position motion sensors for your alarm.

Lock Suppliers
Why not go one step further and invest in a keyless digital lock? You can access your home by simply entering a pin code! This is a great option if neighbours or dog sitters/walkers need to access your house to check on or feed your pets as you can also create a temporary pin code, for anyone needing to gain access to your property!
