Home Safety Tips
No matter what time of year it’s important that your home has a good security system to protect it. However, when it comes to winter there are often additional challenges for homeowners. Research shows that as the nights get longer and darker the burglars become bolder. In addition to a security system, there are a lot of other ways that you can help keep your home safe in winter to help deter burglars.
Add Some Light
The darkness makes a burglar’s job so much easier so you should aim to take this away from them. Now we understand that it would be expensive to have 24/7 lighting but there are other options including LED lighting or motion-censored lighting. We recommend placing these lights at vulnerable points or entrance points such as doors or windows. Once the darkness is taken away a burglar is less likely to attempt a break-in as there is a high risk of being seen.
Put Away your Tools
If you’re shovelling the snow or cleaning your garden this winter, don’t forget to put away all the tools you use. A shovel could be used by a criminal to break a window or a ladder could be used to reach an open window. By putting away your tools you are taking away possible equipment that could aid burglars in their attempt at a break-in.
Lock Up
Locking your doors and windows is something we recommend all year round but that doesn’t make it any less important in winter. With burglaries high during the autumn and winter seasons, it’s worth remembering that over 60% of burglars enter through an unlocked door or in winter and it only takes them minutes. So if the kids are out playing in the snow, or you are going into the garden to de-ice your ice lock up your doors and windows.
